(HOUSTON, January 3, 2007) — Utilizing a unique style that led her to join the debut episode of HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry. Brooklyn-based Palestinian poet Suheir Hammad will fuse words and music to confront and inform about the Palestinian American experience in a compelling evening. The event includes a dramatic spoken word performance by Hammad as well as music through Rok Box’s DJ Witness, with a collaborative set titled Beats from the Middle East / Rhymes from Occupied Palestine featuring DJ Rami, DJ Antonio, and DJ Gracie.

“This exciting evening, VBB’s first event of 2007, embodies the heart of what VBB strives to do,” says VBB Board President Marcela Descalzi. “The issues faced by Palestinians continue to remain unresolved and VBB is proud to bring Suheir Hammad to Houston so she can share her views about forced borders and exile—issues that not only affect the lives of Palestinians but those that impact all of us globally.”

About Suheir Hammad:

Suheir Hammad’s accomplishments span a large gamut of literary surfaces, from publications in periodicals such as The Amsterdam News, Essence, STRESS Hip-Hop Magazine and the Middle East Report; to the anthologies New to North America (Burning Bush Press), Listen Up! (Ballantyne), The Space Between Our Footsteps (Simon & Schuster) and 33 Things Every Girl Should Know About Women's History (Crown Publishers), and on to theatrical horizons in her production of plays including Blood Trinity (NY Hip-Hop Theatre Festival) and ReOrientalism (Center for Cultural Exchange). Hammad has worked hard to bring her art to a diversity of audiences: she has been featured on the BBC World Service and National Public Radio as well as prisons to universities throughout the United States. Hammad’s newest book of poetry, Zaatar Diva (Cypher Books) is available in bookstores now.

Words from Exile: Suheir Hammad, is produced by Hadeel Assali, Hana Elsahly, Gunjen Mittal, Iman Saqr, and Hahleemah Wright and VBB. The evening is cosponsored The Proletariat, Arab Roots and KPFT 90.1 FM, and is funded in part by the Houston Arts Alliance, Houston Endowment, Texas Commission on the Arts, and Poets & Writers.
