Over the past few years, Voices Breaking Boundaries (VBB) and its Board have honored a single person who reflects VBB’s passionate commitment to speaking out and inciting social change through art. To mark the entrance into our “teen” years, VBB’s 2013 Valiente Award will honor founders of the organization: Marcela Descalzi, Jacsun Shah + Sehba Sarwar.

Aperitivos will be provided along with free valet parking. The evening is an opportunity for YOU to support VBB so we can continue to explore urgent issues in Houston and beyond.

We invite you as both our supporters and friends to celebrate VBB’s entrance into our “teen” years! In honor of the moment, VBB’s Valiente award—taken from “the strong,” in the Mexican Loteria cards—has been renamed La Valiente, emphasizing the term’s local, cultural and geopolitical origins.

We hope you will join us as we look backward to our origins and forward as we begin our next big living room arts production, Borderlines. This project will celebrate open spaces that are still to be found in regions lacerated by externally-imposed borders. We will be focusing on connections between south Texas and South Asia, and our ambivalent proximity to and positionality in relation to the Mexican border.

As we envision VBB continuing to grow beyond the original voices—so critical to its infancy and early years—our new productions will also introduce young artists and new staff members who join us to reflect upon our communities’ diverse connections to multiple borders.

*All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards the support of VBB. Art Catalogs are new publications we are creating to highlight two of VBB’s recent living room art productions: Homes and Histories and Women Under Siege.
