as of July 2014

Since 2003, VBB and our Board have honored artists and activists who reflect our organization's passionate commitment to speaking out and inciting social change through art. This year, we return to our literary roots (VBB began with a poem and a bookstore, after all) by honoring Gwendolyn Zepeda and Rich Levy, two writers + poets who continue persevering to carve out spaces for their work and their voices

We invite you to join us on Saturday, August 23rd as we honor these two renowned Houston writers to celebrate their achievements!

All support for La Valiente 2014 goes toward funding VBB's Borderlines project, through which VBB explores connections between two border regions, North America (US, Mexico, and Canada) and South Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh) through artistic expression and creation. For more information about Borderlines, please visit our interactive website, Vimeo, or Flickr pages.

About the La Valiente 2014 Honorees

Gwendolyn Zepeda

Gwendolyn Zepeda is a Houston-based author that is best-known for her works of fiction, including Growing Up with Tamales; Houston, We Have a Problema; and Lone Star Legend. Zepeda is also an accomplished poet. She has several chapbooks and published poems to her name. She recently launched her new book of poetry Falling in Love with Fellow Prisoners. In 2014-15, Gwen was appointed Houston's first Poet Laureate.

Rich Levy

Rich Levy earned his MFA at the Iowa Writers Workshop, and his poems have appeared in Boulevard, Callaloo, Gulf Coast, High Plains Literary Review, Pool, The Texas Observer, The Texas Review, and elsewhere, while his first collection of poetry Why Me? was published in 2009. A jazz obsessive with a collection of recordings that borders on the obscene, Levy serves as executive director of Inprint Inc. and serves on VBB's advisory board.
